New records and redescriptions of American species of Mesocyclops and of Diacyclops bernardi (Petkovski, 1986) (Copepoda: Cyclopoida) Naturalis
Reid, Janet W..
Recent collections in the south central U.S.A. have included three neotropical and one probably introduced species that are presently assigned to the cyclopoid copepod genus Mesocyclops. Mesocyclops longisetus var. curvatus Dussart, 1987, is reported from Louisiana, U.S.A., and Panama; published records of Mesocyclops longisetus (Thiébaud, 1914) sensu lato in the southern U.S.A. are reviewed. Mesocyclops reidae Petkovski, 1986, is reported from Mississippi, U.S.A., and Honduras. Mesocyclops ruttneri Kiefer, 1981, is redescribed from type specimens collected in Austria, and newly reported from Louisiana, Mississippi, China, Thailand, and Viet Nam. This species is considered to have been introduced from Asia into Austria and the U.S.A. Mesocyclops bernardi...

New way to estimate efficient use of energy in copepods during migrations ArchiMer
Petipa, T; Ostrovskaya, N.
It is shown that the energy expenditures on the mechanical movements of copepods depend on the knowledge of character of velocity movements range at active phase. The method of direct estimates of energy expenditures for copepod vertical migration permits to determine more real coefficients of chemical energy utilization on the mechanical work.

Nutrition chez des copepodes en milieu lagunaire mediterraneen en fonction de la concentration en particules et de la temperature ArchiMer
Gaudy, R; Pagano, M.
The zooplankton of an eutrophic brackish lagoon (Etang de Berre), near Marseille (France) was studied during an annual cycle. It was characterized by large populations of a pelagic copepod (Acartia tonsa ). Grazing on natural particles by this species was investigated. Adults were able to use an extended range of particle sizes, but showed selectivity for particles concentration was observed (14 mu m). Temperature and particles concentration appear to modify the selectivity behavior. Juvenile stages could also catch particles of various size but did not show the same selectivity for the peak particles as adults. Daily food ration was high comparatively to open-sea copepods. Taking into account several results obtained on food ration, egg production and...

On Reidcyclops, new genus (Crustacea, Copepoda), with the first description of the male of Reidcyclops Trajani (Reid & Strayer, 1994), new combination Naturalis
Karanovic, Tomislav.
Reidcyclops n. gen. (Copepoda, Cyclopoida) is established to comprise three species, previously considered as members of the genus Diacyclops: Reidcyclops dimorphus (Reid & Strayer, 1994) n. comb., R. imparilis (Monchenko, 1985) n. comb., and R. trajani (Reid & Strayer, 1994) n. comb. (here designated as the type species). This genus is characterised by a 2-segmented fifth leg, and by the presence of sexual dimorphism in the swimming legs, as well as by other characteristics. In this paper the male of R. trajani is described for the first time from Macedonia. The taxonomic position of the new genus within the subfamily Cyclopinae is discussed.

Peculiarities of reproduction and generative production of tropical copepods ArchiMer
Sazhina, L.
The aim of the present investigation consisted in revealing the regular natural changes of fecundity in mass pelagic copepods of the World Ocean tropical zone. Particular emphasis was placed on determination of the clutch size, duration of development, rate of generative production formation at both organism and population levels, and connection of these processes with environmental conditions. The major difficulty lay in the fact that most mass species of tropical copepods are laying eggs immediately into water thus complicating the determination of quantitative characteristics of reproduction.

Phylogeny and biogeography of the Ergasilidae (Copepoda, Poecilostomatoida), with reconsideration of the taxonomic status of the Vaigamidae Naturalis
Pinto da Motta Amado, Maria Auxiliadora; Ho, Ju-Shey; Falavigna da Rocha, Carlos Eduardo.
Nineteen genera are currently considered valid in the Ergasilidae. A cladistic analysis was conducted on these genera and the five genera composing the closely allied Vaigamidae. Nineteen morphological characters were selected and polarized using Anthessius (Anthessiidae) as the outgroup. The most parsimonious cladogram (tree length = 60, Consistency Index = 0.50, Retention Index = 0.71), obtained through the use of the BB command in Hennig 86, is composed of eight major clades, with the five vaigamid genera composing the most derived clade. Based on Wiley’s (1981) “sequencing” convention, the five vaigamid genera cannot be placed in a family separate from the Ergasilidae. The biogeography of the ergasilid genera is discussed. Vaigamus spinicephalus is...

Precopulatory mate guarding and mating in Tachidius discipes (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) Naturalis
Dürbaum, Johannes.
Precopulatory mate guarding and mating behaviour of Tachidius discipes Giesbrecht, 1881, has been analysed using a video camera mounted on a microscope. Males preferably accompany fourth or fifth stage female copepodids during precopulatory mate guarding; only rarely are third copopodid stages guarded. Rare cases of males clasping juvenile males are also known. Males are active during mate guarding and constantly change the site of attachment of their antennules. This behaviour may ensure continued association of the adult male with the juvenile copepodid when the latter moults during the mate guarding phase. The final moult of the female, once observed only, lasts only 2 minutes. Copulation immediately follows but is preceded by the male’s control of the...

Production de chitine par les crustaces du zooplancton de la baie de Calvi (Corse) ArchiMer
Gervasi, E; Jeuniaux, C; Dauby, P.
Chitin was estimated in samples of planktonic crustaceans living in Calvi Bay (Corsica). The percentages of chitin, with respect to dry weight, are comprised between 3.10% in Clausocalanus spp. and 12.22% in Cladocera (mainly Evadne ). The percentage of chitin remained approximatively constant during larval development in Calanus helgolandicus (3.26%). Using these results and the values of total biomass and production estimated by Dauby (1985) at the same place during a complete annual cycle (1983-1984), chitin biomass and production were calculated for every planktonic crustacean species (or group of species) and for the whole crustacean plankton. Daily chitin production was maximum during May (20.06 mg.m super(-2)/d). As far as the whole year is...

Proposal of Tiddergasilus gen. nov. (Ergasilidae: Cyclopoida) for T. iheringi comb. nov. from the gills of Hoplias malabaricus (Erythrinidae: Characiformes) from Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Marques,Taísa Mendes; Boeger,Walter A..
ABSTRACT Ergasilus von Nordmann, 1832 is the type and the most speciose genus of Ergasilidae, with more than 150 valid species. The first species of this genus, Ergasilus iheringi Tidd, 1942, was described from the Neotropical Region, from the gills of Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794). Since then, 35 new species of Ergasilidae have been described from the Neotropics. However, a reanalysis of the available type specimens of E. iheringi revealed features that suggest that it represents a lineage independent from Ergasilus. Consequently, we propose Tiddergasilus gen. nov. (Ergasilidae: Cyclopoida) to accommodate T. iheringi (Tidd, 1942) comb. nov. The species was re-examined and redescribed based on available type specimens. Tiddergasilus gen. nov. is...

Psammocyclopinidae fam. n., a new monophyletic group of marine Cyclopoida (Copepoda, Crustacea), with the description of Psammocyclopina georgei sp. n. from the Magellan Region Zoologia
Martínez Arbizu,Pedro.
Psammocyclopina georgei sp. n. is described from submersed sands in the Magellan Strait, South Atlantic Ocean. This is the second species of the genus, previously known only from the Indian Ocean (Mozambique). Psammocyclopina Wells, 1967 is the sistergroup of Metacyclopina Lindberg, 1953. Psammocyclopinidae fam. n. is accordingly proposed to unify these genera into one monophyletic unit. The sistergroup of the new family is a cluster of cyclopinid genera composed of Cyclopinodes Wilson, 1932, Pseudocyclopina Lang, 1946, Parapseudocyclopinodes Lindberg, 1961, Hemicyclopina Herbst, 1952, Procyclopina Herbst, 1955, Heterocydopina Plesa, 1968, Neocyclopina Herbst, 1952, and an as yet undescribed new genus (Martinez Arbizu, in prep.). Range extension of Boeckella bergi Richard, 1897 (Crustacea: Copepoda: Centropagidae), with comments on the taxonomy of the species Biota Neotropica
Previattelli,Daniel; Perbiche-Neves,Gilmar; Menu Marque,Silvina; Rocha,Carlos Eduardo Falavigna da.
We present new records of Boeckella bergi at several water bodies in Argentina and Brazil. Within these records the northernmost and southernmost limits of occurrence of B. bergi in South America are included. The ample range of distribution is consistent with former studies, but it is more extensive than previously known. Observations on habitat preferences are also made. This species is tolerant to temperate climate conditions in this region of South America, with wide amplitude of temperature between summer and winter seasons, and irregular patterns of precipitation.

Robustunguis gen. nov., a genus of decapod associated laophontids (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) Naturalis
Fiers, F..
The genus Robustunguis gen. nov. is erected for two species of laophontid harpacticoids: R. ungulatus spec. nov. and R. minor spec. nov. Both species were recovered from washings of decapod crustaceans collected along the coasts of Florida (U.S.A.) and Shimoni (Kenya). Robustunguis gen. nov. is closely related to Coullia Hamond, but differs significantly from the latter because of the remarkable prehensile first leg adapted to clench the bristles covering the body and body parts of the hosts.
